Stove not as advertised.

AI Highlights
  • Glass creosotes quickly; glass stays dirty.
  • Door must stay open to start; air is poor.
  • Thermostat starts late; fan cannot be manually started.
Updated by user Nov 29, 2025

Find a working product and view it / test it extensively. Product information on website, etc. did not match real life experience.

Original review Nov 14, 2025
I've had a number of wood-burning inserts; put in a Lopi when the last one burned out. I burn cured, stored wood.

Lopi glass creosotes over immediately and will not stay clean - glass wash is a joke. I have to leave the door open for the fire to start - the controlled air supply is poorly designed and does not allow enough air to get a fire going with the door closed. The thermostat takes forever to turn on, seldom before 600 deg F; often after 900, losing heat I could be dispersing. I cannot manually turn on the fan, so I must rely on the thermostat.

The fan is noisy. I complained to the local retailer and had them look at it (confirm install, draw, wood quality) but no satisfaction - 'live with it.' I researched a lot, but erred in not finding one installed so I could see all this before buying. The retailer said Lopi would call me, but they never did.

Once it is lit and burning, it heats well, but you cannot see the fire, so it's warm but not inviting. Not impressed.
Pros:
  • Produce heat
Cons:
  • Have to leave door open for 20 minutes to start fire
  • Thermostat comes on very late
  • Creosote makes large glass opening useless fan is noisy

Preferred solution: Full refund

User's recommendation: Keep shopping. See one in action.

Installing fresh air intake on liberty lopstove

AI Highlights
  • Installation manuals were confusing because the cold air intake fit a different stove.
  • The kit was universal and did not require buying the $100 kit.

You need to have manuals for installation for the accessory installation like the cold air intake was for a different stove and made it very confusing. the kit was universal.

It actually did not need to buy the $100 kit.

I'm just giving feedback to hopefully. You will change your ways.

User's recommendation: You need to have better manuals for installation and benefits.

Manufacturing defect

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • Gasket replacement is regular maintenance and not covered by warranty.
  • Support says hinge issue is normal and warranty work is dealer-handled.
Original review updated May 11, 2025

After about six months of using my new Evergreen Lopi wood-burning stove, the door gasket failedit just popped off one day. I contacted Lopi customer service via email and was told that replacing the gasket is considered regular maintenance and not covered by the warranty.

So, I ordered a replacement. However, when I went to remove the door to install the new gasket, the top hinge was completely stuck. And I mean stuck. The instructions for removing the door suggested prying it up while moving it back and forth, since the hinge can sometimes be snug and might require some "elbow grease" to remove.

But nothing I tried worked, not even tapping the pin from the bottom with a pin punch and hammer. When I reached out to Lopi support again, they reiterated that I should just move the door back and forth or tap it with a pin punch. Lopi also informed me that all warranty services were handled by the dealer, not them. So, I called the dealer, and together, the tech and I spent over an hour hammering away at this pin with a sledgehammer.

After a ridiculous amount of effort, we finally managed to get the pin out. When I updated Lopi support, I was told this was normal and not a manufacturing defect.

Lopi refuses to take responsibility for the issue, and given their dismissive customer service, Im giving them one star. Had I known this is what I'd get with a Lopi stove, I definitely would have chosen a different brand.

Preferred solution: Apology

User's recommendation: Caveat emptor - Buyer beware

400 LB HUNK OF USELESS METAL

AI Highlights
  • Damper stuck closed; no bypass damper.
  • Damper is inside a welded box with no access.
  • No repair info online; the door must stay cracked to use.

Damper stuck closed. Main damper, not bypass damper.

My unit does not have the bypass damper. The only way to use it is to leave the door cracked. Close the door and fire goes out IMMEDIATELY. Absolutely nothing online on how to repair.

Damper is inside a welded box, no access whatsoever. Once the damper fails the unit is basically useless. Maybe I can get something for scrap, as that's what this is.

If anyone from Lopi reads this, you should be ashamed to show your face in public for putting out such a worthless product. Total ripoff, DO NOT PURCHASE A LOPI STOVE!!!

User's recommendation: DO NOT PURCHASE A LOPI STOVE

Liberty Stove Fan bent and loud from Day 1......Replacement denied

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
AI Highlights
  • Lopi Liberty stove fan is loud and bent from day one.
  • Replacement blades not sold; assembly over $300.
  • Customer service is short; not helpful.

My Lopi Liberty woodstove fan has been loud and bent from day 1. When I asked for a replacement fan blade they refused to sell me just the blades.

The screen, blade and motor assembly is over $300.

Totally not customer oriented.

Take it or leave it approach.

Would not recommend this stove or Lopi to anyone.

Chuck Kniest their customer service rep is very short with customers. Doesnt' offer alternatives, just the easy out answer of "no"

User's recommendation: Run.......do not buy Lopi if you want to have a ventilated stove.

#!% Hello Greg, (In case you were wondering why the first three letters are symbols, I had to start with 3 symbols to be able to post as a guest.) I am a Lopi dealer who has heated 4800 square feet portion of our showroom with a Liberty for well over twenty years, in business since 1981. I just now saw your comments and looked up the replacement parts list and indeed see that no replacement blade is available by itself for the fan for the latest model that changed in 2020.

I am assuming you do not have an older version built before 2020 that would have a "squirrel cage" type blower. I myself have never yet had a bent fan blade complaint on this stove. However, I have worked with other similar fan blade issues on other stoves, and I think it would worth trying to simply remove the fan assembly from its mounting and hand bend the blade (they are usually soft enough to move by hand) so it does not brush up against the housing anywhere and hopefully, that should solve your issue. It may be a good idea to try spin it by hand first to make sure that what you did to re-bend it is successful in spinning freely without touching anything.

Then mount it and try it again during the next fire. If it works, you are done, but if it is still rubbing on something, it is possible that in moving really fast, that it still may need a second attempt to adjust it because in moving superfast when it is actually working, it still may be hitting the housing. If you need more help, please feel free to contact me at fran@***.net. Make sure to send your phone number and remind me who you are and what your issue is so I can call you when I have a moment.

I could also give you some of my tips to get the absolute best performance from that Liberty based on my 43 years of industry experience that I achieve routinely and have long taken for granted everyday it gets used to heat my showroom. Here is a link to a 15 year old video of my Liberty getting top performance burning smoke for fuel (long before the Liberty's revision and slight remodel in 2020.) https://***/Videos/Product-Showcase (to copy and paste into your address bar.) I have NEVER had any commercial utility type bill in that entire time since I started my business in either my personal home or my business, and I am a walking encyclopedia of knowledge about everything related to burning wood, especially in a high-efficiency stove! I volunteer for you to contact me to pick my brain. The Liberty is our customer's favorite stove for large areas, but I am very active with my wood stove customers after the sale, to help them get the exact same top performance after the sale as I routinely, predictably expect and get from my Liberty every day I use it.

I am rather unusual in that I charge absolutely nothing to help other fellow woodburners in need, to consult with me to help resolve their issues that their dealer won't or can't help them resolve. So do you think the bent place is rubbing on the blower housing somewhere?

I will look forward to trying to help you and hope you reply to my email with your phone number. Fran

You seem to know what you're talking about. I'm considering buying an aftermarket loopy 1999 freedom wood stove insert. My concerns are is a EPA certified for today's regulations and what do you have to say about that stove.

  • I paid $4038 and regret the purchase.
  • This 1120 sq ft Sierra foothills home struggles to reach 75 degrees and heats only from the front.

falseI made a HUGE mistake when I bought this terrible stove . I payed $4038.00 after doing much research and looking at many stoves , I thought LOPI was the best choice , BOY was I wrong .

I live in the foothills of the Seirra Nevada Mountains east of Sacramento , I can get down to 20 degree's or colder many nights . I have a 1120 sq ft house and the stove struggles to get the temputer up to 75 degrees and that's only if I load the fire box to the MAX ! It only puts out heat from the front ...not the sides ...not the top ... not the bottom.

They put heat sheilds on the sides that I had to remove and I had to remove some of the fire bricks ( on the sides ) to get heat to radiate from the sides . They should have tested this stove for a year or more before putting it into production . The firebox is only 2 cu ft .

and the floor of the firebox is only 2 inches from the door sill so every time I open the door hot coals and ashes fall out onto the hearth ! DON'T BUY THIS STOVE !Don't

User's recommendation: Don't buy this terrible woodstove !

I agree on the efficiency factor. Did the research also but after installing and burning wood for 3 month we finally realized the heat output was horrible.

Called the business about the lack of heat and they came and found they had installed it incorrectly. Immediately the heat output increased. It is by far the dirtiest stove I have been around. Ash everyware no matter how careful you open the door.

I also do not think the burn is anything close to what is advertised. I hate to say but I would not buy this stove.
